Primary education is the first stage of education
and has as main objective to organize, provide and offer all
children-regardless of age, sex, country of origin, marital status, social
background and mental abilities - such opportunities to develop balanced the
cognitive, effective and psycho motor domain.
Attendance in primary class is compulsory for
all children who have reached the age of 4 years and 8 months on 1 September of
the year will begin their studies while attending primary school is compulsory
for all children who have reached at the age of 5 years and 8 months.
The curriculum of schools and the teaching methods
used in the classroom, a special emphasis on the learning process and focus on
strategies that help students learn how to like and also learn how to develop
critical and creative thinking.
A key concern of Primary Education, too, is the
effort that the students get to know and love their national heritage and
realize their national identity: the Greek language, the Greek Orthodox
religion, history, culture and tradition of our country.
At the same time, conscious of its responsibility
towards multicultural trends developing in the modern world of globalization,
helps children acquire intercultural awareness, fostering attitudes of
acceptance and respect for diversity of members of other ethnic groups. Also
important is the work done in primary education and contribute to the
harmonious coexistence of all students of a school, regardless of different
ethnic or other backgrounds of everyone.
Especially nowadays, where Cyprus is no longer an
official member of the European Union, it goes without saying that in primary
education performed important work to the young students to gain from early
awareness of their identity as Europeans.
Therefore, the Directorate of Primary Education
pays, constantly endeavors to continuously improve and upgrade the Primary
Education. Aim for continuous teacher training, revising and writing new
textbooks that are intertwined with the needs of the curriculum and of society
in general. At the same time, aims to modernize teaching methods and approaches
to the design and implementation of new development projects, increasing
remedial instruction and special education programs, the expansion and construction
of new schools and, generally, in creating that infrastructure needed for
quality improvement educational.
The various areas within the jurisdiction of the
Directorate of Primary Education include: Primary Education (Primary Schools:
Public and Private), the primary Education (Schools: Public, Community,
Private), Special Education (Special Schools, Special Units and personalized
assistance to children with special needs integrated into primary schools and
kindergartens) Cyprus Educational Mission,
the Greek Education Abroad, the Educational and Summer Camps and Training Centers.
